Chocolate & Sea Salt Smoothie

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Having a healthy relationship with food means enjoying things you love and fitting them into your lifestyle.

It’s time to throw the term “cheat day” out the window… because what you eat isn’t a moral reflection on who you are as a person. Cheat is a loaded word that implies that you should feel guilty for what you’re eating.

I challenge you to eliminate the word cheat from your vocabulary when it comes to food… and treat yourself instead.

Now, this does NOT mean you should eat things that you know will hurt you. And, I'm not suggesting you should eat a lot of things that will prevent you from reaching your health and wellness goals. For instance, I have Celiac disease, which means I absolutely cannot ever consume wheat, barley, or rye, or anything made from them. I also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which are both associated with higher incidences of food sensitivities and allergies. I have learned (through extensive research as well as elimination diets with proper re-introduction of one food at a time) that I should not eat rice, corn, and most legumes as they cause me to have digestive issues, poor sleep, swollen hands and face, extremely dry eyes and mouth, and skin rashes. The reactions, along with several days of higher pain levels and increased lethargy, just aren't worth it to me, no matter how yummy the food containing those ingredients are.

Now, back to this chocolate and sea salt smoothie that is a delicious and nutritious breakfast, or a perfect treat any time of the day:

Ingredients - 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice) - 1/2 to 1 cup ice - 1 scoop chocolate protein powder - 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder - ¼ tsp sea salt (or Himalayan salt) - 1/2 to 1 cup fresh spinach (you won’t even taste it!)

Instructions 1. Place all ingredients in a blender; cover, then blend until smooth.

Tip: sometimes I use frozen cherries or frozen raspberries instead of ice. It takes the smoothie from delicious to AMAZINGLY delicious!!!!

What is your favorite food, and do you prefer a salty or sweet treat?
