Herbal Remedies You Can Find in the Grocery Store or Your Garden

Herbal remedies are plants that have a medicinal effect*. Herbs contain powerful chemicals that many pharmaceutical companies and scientists use to base prescription drugs after, and they are continuously being studied. Many of these plants are either available in the grocery store, can be grown quite easily in your yard, or even grown in a small (indoor or outdoor) container garden.

Here are just a few of the MANY plants that can have a significant effect on your overall wellbeing.
Ginseng. Ginseng is one of the most popular plants in Chinese medicine. The most popular varieties are American ginseng and Asian ginseng. American ginseng is considered to have a greater relaxing effect, while the Asian variety is more stimulating. Consider these benefits of greater focus and concentration. Ginseng is also an excellent antioxidant and has been show to reduce inflammation. It could also lower blood sugar, relieve fatigue, and have benefits against cancer.
Garlic. Garlic is readily available and a powerful herbal remedy. Most people enjoy the taste of garlic (my husbands says that garlic is one of my food groups!). It has been shown to significantly reduce the duration and severity of cold symptoms. Hypertension symptoms respond positively to garlic consumption. Studies also show that garlic lowers cholesterol levels, may help prevent Alzheimer’s, and could help with the process of removing heavy metals from the body
Turmeric. Turmeric is used in Ayurvedic medicine and is also a popular cooking spice. It is readily available in most grocery stores. The primary active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. It is as effective as aspirin and ibuprofen in treating inflammation. It is also believed to be beneficial in treating and preventing cancer. Depression, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s are also believed to be helped by the consumption of turmeric. Turmeric also has been benefits for skin, make a simple face mask by combining 1/2 cup plain yogurt with 1/4 teaspoon turmeric. Leave on for 15 minutes then gently rinse off.
Ginger. Another very common grocery store item, ginger, is excellent to help relieve upset stomachs. It can be used as a spice or made into tea. During cold season, it can be used in warm bath because it helps with the flow of blood and the flow of energy throughout the body.
Valerian root. This might be a little more difficult to find, though it may be in the tea section of the grocery store. This is my favorite pre-made tea that contains valerian. You’ll probably have to grow it on your own, but it’s worth the effort as this flowering plant has many benefits. From head tension, sleeplessness, upset stomach, sore muscles, exhaustion, and anxiety, this herb has been shown to help restore balance.
Chamomile. This pretty, daisy-like flower is most commonly consumed in tea form. Chamomile is believed to relieve sleeplessness, reduce cold symptoms, boost immunity, and lower stress levels. Making a chamomile rinse for your hair can help brighten dull locks. Chamomile tea is available at most grocery stores. Herbal remedies can be very effective and inexpensive. $1 of garlic, which has countless proven wellness benefits and uses, can easily last a week. If your budget is tight, herbal remedies can be a great way to boost your health without breaking the bank. And, if you’re already feeling great, herbs can help to keep you that way. You have nothing to lose. In fact, your food might taste even more delicious while you’re making your body stronger.
